Rheumatoid Arthritis

Personalised nutritional support

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition that primarily affects the joints and causes pain, swelling and stiffness. The joints most commonly affected are the fingers, hands, wrists and feet. Like other autoimmune conditions, the immune system goes into overdrive and in the case of rheumatoid arthritis, cells of the immune system attack the cells that line the joints, causing the joints to become inflamed, swollen, stiff and painful.

Often rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints symmetrically. For example, people may experience symptoms in both hands or both wrists at the same time but this is not always the case. Additional symptoms can include a general feeling of fatigue and lack of energy, sweating, poor appetite and weight loss.

“At Ellingham Nutrition, our Registered Nutritional Therapist, Annie, will support you to unravel the nutrition and dietary myths and conflicting information.”

Conventional medicines approach to treating rheumatoid arthritis includes Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), corticosteroids and biological drugs and sometimes surgery with the aim to slow down the progression and limit the impact of the condition. However, as with other drugs, they can cause uncomfortable side effects.

The functional medical approach to supporting rheumatoid arthritis includes:-

  • Supporting the digestive system and balancing the gut microbiome.
  • Removing trigger foods, which may include gluten and dairy.
  • Supporting the immune system response.
  • Optimising nutritional status.
  • Adopting an anti-inflammatory diet to calm down the inflammation.
  • Include supportive supplements to reduce pain and inflammation.

How I work

Following a 30 minute FREE discovery call, you will be asked to complete a nutritional questionnaire. This helps me to identify the possible triggers and imbalances that may have led to and caused your symptoms. Then we can meet for a 75 minute consultation, either face-to-face in the clinic, via zoom video call or telephone according to your preference. My role as a nutritional therapist is to tailor a nutritional and lifestyle plan depending on your needs and ultimate goals.

Our fees

This service is tailored for people who aren’t able to make it into the clinic but still want one-to-one nutritional support from the comfort of their own homes and fit around your busy lifestyle.

The Ellingham Nutrition team offer consultations online via zoom, this offers you a similar experience to an in-person appointment, but the consultations will be via a secure online video instead of a face-to-face consulting room.

Our nutritional consultations can also be conducted face-to-face in our clinic. A one-to-one consultation with each client will further understand the factors affecting their nutrition and well-being.
